Why a Quiet Garage Door Turns Loud

Every Door Is Quiet Once

New doors are quiet because the bearings still have grease, the hardware is tight and everything is square. Doors get loud gradually, which is why most people cannot say when it started. The useful question is not how loud it has become but what kind of noise it is making, because each kind belongs to a different family of parts.

Rolling Noise

A squeak or a rumble whose pitch rises and falls with the speed of the door is coming from something that rotates. On a residential door that is a roller bearing, a pulley or the shaft bearings at either end of the torsion tube. Rolling noise gets worse in the cold, worse when a bearing has lost its grease and worse still once grit has got in. It is the single most common complaint on a door more than five years old.

Impact Noise

A knock, a clunk or a bang that happens at the same height every cycle is a discontinuity, not a wear item. The door is passing something. Common causes are a joint between two track sections that is no longer flush, a track bracket that has loosened and let the rail shift, a flat spotted roller that thumps once per rotation, or the transition where a curved section meets the horizontal. Because it repeats at a fixed position, this is the easiest noise on a door to locate: watch the door go up and note the height, then look at the rail there.

Scraping and Grinding

A metallic scrape means metal is touching metal in a place it should not. Usually a roller stem has slipped in its hinge and the wheel is riding against the side of the rail, or the track has been pushed slightly closer to the door and the wheel is bottoming out. Grinding across the whole travel is often a seized roller being dragged rather than rolled, which polishes a bright line into the rail and gives the diagnosis away visually.

Rattle

A general shaking rattle with no clear source is usually loose fasteners. A garage door is a large assembly of bolted parts that gets shaken thousands of times a year, and hinges, brackets, the opener rail and the mounting angle all work loose. This is the noise most likely to be fixed by an hour with a socket set and no parts at all.

Coastal Air Accelerates All of It

Garages within a few miles of the Orange County coast run corroded bearings and rusted stems years earlier than inland ones. Salt gets into an unsealed bearing, the grease turns gritty, and the wheel starts polishing its own race. It is the main reason sealed bearings are worth the small premium here specifically.

The Test That Separates Door From Opener

Pull the emergency release and run the door by hand. If the noise is still there, it belongs to the door and its hardware. If it disappears, the opener, its rail, its trolley or its chain is making it. This costs nothing and eliminates half the possible causes in one pass.

What Not to Do About Noise

Do not spray a household lubricant at everything. Light oils wash out remaining grease, attract dust and leave the part worse off in a month. Do not lubricate the track itself: the track is a running surface, not a bearing surface, and oil there collects grit and turns into a grinding paste. Noise is worth diagnosing rather than silencing, because the sound is usually the only warning you are going to get.
