The Wheel Is the Smaller Half of the Question

Roller comparisons usually start with the material of the wheel, which is the part you can see. The part that determines how long the roller lasts and how quietly it runs is the bearing inside the stem: how many ball bearings it has, whether it is sealed, and how well it was greased in the first place. A nylon wheel on a cheap unsealed bearing will outperform steel for about a year and then be no better.

Steel Rollers

Steel is the standard builder fitment. It is hard wearing, cheap, and tolerant of heat and misalignment. Its drawbacks are noise, because metal on metal in a steel rail transmits every imperfection, and corrosion, which matters more within reach of the marine layer than it does inland. A steel roller in good condition on a well aligned track is a perfectly serviceable part. A tired one is the loudest thing in the garage.

Nylon Rollers

Nylon wheels run against the rail with far less noise and no risk of rust on the running surface. Good ones are noticeably quieter, and on an attached garage under a bedroom that difference is the entire reason people change them. Cheap nylon rollers with plain bushings instead of ball bearings are a false economy: they are quiet when new, then wear oval, develop a flat spot and start knocking.

Reading the Specification

A roller is described by its stem length, stem diameter, wheel diameter and bearing count. Stem length matters because a stem that is too short can pull out of the hinge under load. Wheel diameter is set by the track size, commonly two inches on residential doors. Bearing count is the number worth asking about: budget rollers carry seven ball bearings, better ones eleven or thirteen, and more bearings spread the load and last longer. Sealed means the bearing is shielded against dust and salt air, which is the specification that matters most in a coastal Orange County garage.

Cycle Ratings Are Comparative, Not Absolute

Manufacturers quote roller life in cycles, and the numbers are useful for comparing two products from the same maker rather than predicting a date. Real life is decided by alignment, by whether the door is balanced, and by how much grit the garage sees. A well specified roller on a bent track will fail early no matter what the box said.

Replace the Set, Not the One

Rollers wear together, and a single new roller in a row of old ones does very little except move the noise along by one position. A residential sectional door typically takes ten to twelve, and because they are inexpensive the labour is most of the cost. Doing them as a set during a visit you are already paying for is the sensible way to buy them.

The One Roller a Homeowner Should Not Touch

The bottom roller sits in the bottom bracket, and the bottom bracket is under permanent lift cable tension. Removing it with the door closed and the springs wound releases that tension violently. Every other roller on the door can be changed with the door in the right position and the section supported. That one cannot, and it is the reason a full roller change is a trade job rather than a weekend one.

What an Upgrade Will and Will Not Do

New rollers will make a noisy door meaningfully quieter and will smooth out its travel. They will not fix a door that is out of balance, correct a bent track, quieten a chain drive opener or stop a door reversing at the floor. If a contractor proposes rollers as the answer to any of those, ask what they expect the roller change to alter, because the answer should be specific.
